Perhaps some rabbis marry women and make them rebbetzins but my rebbetzin married me and made me a rabbi שלי ושלכם שלה הוא mawkish, but true

Modern davening, in one sentence
The weakness of a significant chunk of modern Judaism is reflected in one sentence I overheard after a Shacharit minyan several days ago:
Person speaking to Chazan: That was quick.
Chazan: I have things to do today!
[My point is not the speed; I didn't find the davening that day to be any faster or slower than the norm at that minyan. Rather, my point is the philosophy.]
I'm in the process of saying Kaddish for my mom, and I'm attending a number of nearby minyanim in order to do so every day. The chazzan where I was on Sunday morning - a shul where the usual pace is quite brisk - set some kind of land speed record.
You must have misheard:
ReplyDeleteCONGREGANT: That was passionate.
CHAZZAN: I have things to do today!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear of your loss.
DeleteI wouldn't be troubled by the speed, if not for the attitude that davening is a speedbump rather than a destination.
