Among other things he mentioned that the Rav doubted whether in America, where one typically owns multiple suits and replaces them on a regular basis, a new suit warrants a shehecheyanu. But I think Joel just meant that the shehechanu on a new garment isn't needed for kiddush, and therefore is a hefsek between the bracha on the wine and drinking it.
