But I think a rabbi's dissonance matters as well, because if he has reached the point of declaring himself a non-believer, he should not be in a role of building others' belief.

Shalom-
Thanks, but I'm not sure I see why this was particularly gutsy. Certainly, greater rabbis than Torczyner have acknowledged their own growth process; I think of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein and his discussion of Amalek, for example.

Tzipporah-
I could have predicted that you would say that...

Isaac-
Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Jack-
Thanks; I assume the other part is Batman...The Rebbetzin's Husbandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14977193945074906534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898782635470765614.post-1204190615023356982010-07-01T03:30:05.916-04:002010-07-01T03:30:05.916-04:00Posts like this are part of why I am proud to call...Posts like this are part of why I am proud to call you a friend. Probably why my teachers all thought I was a pain in the patootie.

My journey has been the opposite of yours - moving slowly toward trusting some other people and ideas and structures, despite the fallible nature of their leaders and originators. Luckily I don't have a public position of authority about any of this.
